The modern Gold Sovereign coin was introduced in 1817 late in the reign of King George III. In 1820, the first-ever Gold Double Sovereign was struck but not introduced into circulation. In 1887, during the reign of Queen Victoria, the Double Sovereign re-emerged and was released into circulation by the Royal Mint. Today, a Double Sovereign is produced each year alongside the long-running Gold Sovereign.
