Overview of the American Gold Buffalo
The American Gold Buffalo Coin was introduced by the United States Mint as a response to the growing global demand for 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold bullion coins. While the well-known American Gold Eagle remains the official bullion coin of the U.S., its 22-karat composition led collectors and investors to seek a purer alternative. The Gold Buffalo fills that role with remarkable craftsmanship, historical significance, and the prestige of being America’s first 24-karat gold coin.
Historic Design by James Earle Fraser
A Tribute to the American West
The design of the American Gold Buffalo Coin Buffalo draws inspiration from James Earle Fraser’s 1913 Indian Head Nickel, a classic piece of early 20th-century American coinage. Fraser, born in Winona, Minnesota, spent his childhood on the Western frontier, deeply influencing the imagery he later created.
Obverse: Native American Chieftain
The obverse showcases a powerful left-profile portrait of a Native American chieftain, formed from a combination of features taken from three real tribal leaders. The word “Liberty” and the coin’s year of issue accompany the portrait, preserving the timeless beauty of the original nickel design.
Reverse: Iconic American Buffalo
The reverse features the legendary American bison, modeled after Black Diamond, a buffalo once housed at the Central Park Zoo. This symbol of strength and endurance reinforces the coin’s strong connection to America’s cultural identity.
