In 1990, the Perth Mint charted a new path forward with its bullion coin collections. Prior to the introduction of the Australian Silver Kookaburra, the mint had issued gold bullion coins in the Australian Nugget Series and platinum coins in an Australian Platypus Series.
Starting in 1990, Perth Mint would focus its major bullion coin programs on native wildlife and plant species. The introduction of the Australian Kookaburra coincided with a rebranding of the Australian Nugget Series as the Australian Kangaroo. Subsequent programs include the Australian Koala, Australian Wedge Tail Eagle, the Australian Emu, and others.
