1921 was a transitional year for the US silver dollar. New silver dollars had not been struck in the United States since the Morgan Silver Dollar program ended in 1904. Following World War I, Congress authorized the Treasury to begin purchasing silver again for the production of silver dollars. In 1921, the US Mint resumed coining silver dollars with the Morgan Dollar design. This image was used through December 1921. At that point, the US Mint unveiled a new design for the silver dollar known as the Peace Dollar.
