The United States Mint is prepared to introduce new bald eagle designs to the reverse of the 2021 American Gold Eagles, but the final design has not been selected nor a die made in time for the introductory coining of 2021 American Gold Eagles. As the US Mint is legislatively committed to producing Gold Eagles to meet demand and must issue its 2021 coins on time, the existing historic design is going to feature first.
By mid-2021, the US Mint will be ready with the new reverse design and will begin striking more 2021 American Gold Eagles in all weights, but with the new design. This makes the 2021 Gold Eagle the first coin ever in the series to feature two different designs in one year.
The obverse side of the 2021 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coins features a depiction of Lady Liberty. Her figure is shown in front-facing relief with a large torch in her right hand to light the way and an olive branch in her left denoting a desire for peace in the future. This design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and originally used on the $20 Double Gold Eagle coin.
