Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins were once accepted as part of any commercial transaction around the world in the 19th century. Even in the 20th century, the gold sovereign remained in circulation for commercial transactions in British colonies and parts of the Middle East as late as the 1950s. Since 1957, the Royal Mint has issued a gold bullion version of the coin, along with a proof version available since 1979.
Although Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins were originally conceived as circulation coins, the sovereign is no longer available in circulation. It does, however, maintain status as a legal tender coin in the United Kingdom. The modern Great Britain Gold Sovereign was reintroduced in 1957 and has, to date, featured only Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy. All gold sovereigns available since 1817 are based on the original English gold sovereigns issued starting in 1603 during the reign of King James I of England.
On the reverse side of the 2019 Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coin is the image of St. George, the patron saint of Britain, on horseback as he slays the dragon. This image has appeared on the reverse of all gold sovereign issued since 1817 with the exception of a few issue years in the late 19th century during the reign of Queen Victoria.
