In the months and years immediately following his assassination in 1865, there were calls in Washington D.C. to erect a monument in honor of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. The first memorial in honor of the slain president was erected in front of City Hall in Washington D.C. in 1868.
However, it would be another several decades until a fitting monument was built to honor the man responsible for preserving the Union with a northern victory in the Civil War. Construction on the Lincoln Memorial began in 1914 and would not be completed until 1922. When it was done, a brilliant Greek-revival hall stood on the National Mall with a towering statue of a seated President Abraham Lincoln inside.
