Britannia is one of the oldest figures, if not the oldest, to feature on British coinage. When the Romans first struck coinage for the province of Britannia, the allegorical figure featured on the coins issued by Emperor Hadrian in the 1st Century AD. Fast forward to the 17th century, and Britannia was now a staple of British coinage. Since that time, she has featured on some denomination of British coinage every year.

As of 2021, British Gold Britannias feature four new security elements on the reverse field. There is a latent security image that changes from a locked padlock to a trident head based on your viewing angle. The background field behind Britannia also changes as you adjust the viewing angle to mimic rolling waves on the ocean. The other elements include micro-text engravings around the design field and tincture lines throughout the image of the Union Jack flag on the reverse.
