Burnished American Silver Eagles are produced by the United States Mint by first burnishing the blanks. Prior to striking the designs in a coining press, the silver blanks used in production are polished in a drum with a burnishing medium that creates a matte finish. The blanks are handled with gloved hands.
From the drum to the coining press to the US Mint packaging, the blanks are carefully handled to ensure the matte finish remains intact. The coins have a low mintage each year when compared to the BU and Proof versions of the coin. For example, the US Mint limited the individual packaging of these coins in 2021 to 175,000.
Walking Liberty is depicted in the obverse design of 2021-W 1 oz Burnished American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coins. The design shows Liberty in left-profile relief as she walks along the horizon toward the sun. The American flag is draped around her figure as she reaches for the sun with one hand and carries branches of oak and laurel in the other.
