The use of the term Britannia dates back to the Roman Era in the British Isles. When the Roman Empire expanded across the English Channel from the European continent to the island of Britain, the province the Romans eventually established became known as Britannia. During the reign of Emperor Hadrian, the Romans issued colonial coins in Britain with an image of Britannia opposite a bust of the emperor.

With the release of 2021 British Silver Britannias, the Royal Mint of England debuts four individual security features that are designed to bring the security of the Britannia Series into the 21st century. These include a micro-text inscription within the design rim that reads, in Latin, “Decus Et Tutamen” and tincture lines within the stripes of the Union Jack. The more detailed security features include a background surface animation and latent security feature. When you adjust the angle of viewing, the surface animation imitates the movement of ocean waves while the latent security feature switches from a padlock to a trident.
