The ox, referred to as oxen as the plural, is a domesticated bovine that is known as the bullock in Australia and India. The draft animal was used by mankind in agricultural societies for thousands of years, with the first documented use of the animals being harnessed and worked with as far back as 4000 BCE.
In Chinese cultural and mythological history, the ox is the second animal in the 12-year cycle of the Zodiac. The powerful draft animal was the second to arrive at a meeting with the Jade Emperor, just behind the mouse that had hitched a ride on the ox’s ear to get it across a river to the meeting.
